The appropriate preparation of the road or pavement foundation is crucially important for the good performance and durability of any paving surface. Always consult a professional engineer, suitably qualified and experienced in pavement design for advice. This is especially true for applications carrying vehicle loads.

As a very rough rule of thumb, the following guidelines may be used as long as it is understood that the applicable ground conditions, the constructed road foundation and the traffic loading may change the requirements completely.
