The Vanstone Large Litter Bins are sturdy robust precast concrete bins made to be placed in a semi-permanent positions. The bins are heavy enough so that it will not be moved around or stolen. They are not easy to turn over. Vanstone Litter Bins are suitable for large standard size plastic refuse bags that fold over the top for good hygiene and easy service.

Vanstone Litter Bins have an exposed aggregate external finish. Exposed aggregate has proven popular with customers as it does not stain easily and is difficult to stick posters and advertisements to.

Because of the natural shrinkage of concrete and also handling stress, this type of product tends to crack. This is especially prevalent along the top rim. The solution is to reinforce the concrete. Vanstone's exposed aggregate Litter Bins are reinforced with non-corrosive glass fibre reinforcing. It is alkali resistant, completely stable and does not corrode. It does the same work as steel reinforcing and is sufficiently strong.

Exposed Aggregate Concrete

The exposed aggregate finish is obtained by using a concrete mix that contains less fines (sand) but more stone than standard concrete. After casting and setting the concrete is removed from the mould at presicily the right time. The concrete is then scrubbed with water, removing the cement paste from the surface. This exposes the attractive stone chips that are in it. Although it works very well, the shortage of sand causes the concrete to be somewhat porous. This cannot be avoided. The pores are too small to notice but rain water is sucked in by means of capillary action. For unreinforced concrete this does not present a structural problem but when steel reinforcing is embedded in the concrete, water comes into contact with it. The water stays there sufficiently long and with oxygen present, the process of oxidation or corrosion starts. Corroding steel always expands. It pushes the concrete out causing cracks and also spalling when advanced.
