Ready Specification for Permeable Paving

About this information:
This is a partial draft-form specification for materials specific to the construction of Permeable Concrete Block Paving. Materials not mentioned here as well as plant and construction are all as per standard specifications for concreted block or segmented paving. This information may be used by Engineers and other professionals who wish to specify permeable paving products by Vanstone. It is meant to complement existing specifications like SANS 1200 MJ and should be used in conjunction with it or similar.

Paving Blocks (Units)
Precast Concrete Paving Blocks shall be manufactured in compliance with the latest version of SANS 1058 under ISO 9002 quality assurance and bear the SABS mark permit. Unless otherwise indicated, blocks shall be class 1, complying with the tensile splitting strength, dimensional tolerances and abrasion resistance requirements. Water absorption testing is not compulsory for Southern Africa.

Precast concrete paving blocks shall be 60mm Aqualock/80mm Aqualock/50mm Aqua Random paving blocks by Vanstone Precast (Pty) Ltd or similar approved.

Sand for Bedding and Jointing
Sand for bedding and jointing shall be approved by the Engineer before use and shall be free from substances that may be deleterious to blocks. The bedding and jointing sand is the same product. It shall be open-graded washed sand without any fines smaller than 1.18mm. The grading of the bedding/jointing sand shall be strictly controlled and at all times and shall conform to:

Nominal sieve size (mm) Passing (%)
9.52 100
4.75 50-100
2.36 0-60
1.18 0

ROAD FOUNDATION (BASE, SUBBASE ETC.)

Note to specifier:
Kindly remember that road foundation layers intended for permeable paving must be single sized crushed stone and not conventional gravel or crusher run.

Crushed stone
Crushed stone shall comply with the requirements of SABS 1083 and be of single size 13mm/19mm/25mm/38mm.

Geofabric Blanket
The synthetic fibres of a geofabric blanket shall consist of at least 85% by mass of an approved poly-carbon material and shall contain such additives as are necessary to render the filaments resistant to ultra-violet radiation and heat. The amount of water absorbed by the fabric after a 24 h soaking in water at 20°C shall be less than 1% by mass. The Engineer's approval of the make and grade of the geofabric shall be obtained before use.
